West Jordan, UT (March 20, 2026) – The first day of spring brought more than just warmer weather to West Jordan this year. It delivered a profound message of hope and compassion directly to cancer patients at CommonSpirit Holy Cross Hospital – Jordan Valley, thanks to a thoughtful visit from students of Roy High School.

A group of Roy High students came to not only usher in the new season but also to give beautiful daffodil bouquets and individually handcrafted cards. These gestures carried messages of love and inspiration to patients undergoing treatment at our CommonSpirit Cancer Center Jordan Valley.

Cultivating Kindness: From Classroom to Cancer Center

The initiative was a true community collaboration. Colten Smith, an floriculture teacher at Roy High, guided his students through the process of growing these cheerful daffodils and arranging them into delicate bouquets. Simultaneously, other students across the high school channeled their creativity into designing and writing heartfelt cards, each one a unique emblem of support.

A Patient's Perspective: 'Hope Goes a Long Way'

The impact on patients was immediate and deeply personal. Ryan Clayton, who is currently receiving treatment for glioblastoma (a brain tumor) at Holy Cross Hospital – Jordan Valley, shared his gratitude with the students.

"I feel honored and blessed to know you guys went out of your way to do this. Hope goes a long way," he said.

A Profound Gesture of Humankindness

Julie Steadman, manager of the cancer center, worked closely with Smith to coordinate this uplifting event.

"This is such a profound gesture of humankindness," Steadman said. "It means so much to our patients to receive this boost of joy and love from these young people. It also had a powerful effect on the high school students as they connected with our patients and learned about their courageous journeys. I saw some young people with tears in their eyes as they understood just how meaningful this effort truly is."

Smith confirmed the popularity of the event among his students, noting it was the most anticipated of his three spring field trips. This marks the second consecutive year of the partnership between Roy High School and Holy Cross Hospital – Jordan Valley, continuing a cherished tradition.

A National Symbol of Support

The presentation of daffodils to cancer patients and survivors on the first day of spring is a long-standing and cherished tradition observed nationwide. It symbolizes rebirth, new beginnings, and unwavering hope in the face of adversity.
