DURANGO, CO (March 16, 2026) – CommonSpirit Mercy Hospital is pleased to announce the re-opening of the dedicated wing known as Mercy Hospice House for patients who require hospice inpatient and palliative care services. This development comes after the State of Colorado permitted an additional 8 beds to move under the hospital license, now making Mercy a 90-bed facility. These additional licensed beds allow Mercy Hospital to further its commitment to providing comprehensive, compassionate, end-of-life care for patients and their families in the Mountain Region.
"We are delighted to, as promised, once again offer a dedicated inpatient hospice unit at Mercy Hospital," said Josh Neff, Mercy Hospital president. "This facility, supported in part by generous community philanthropy, provides a warm, supportive, and clinically excellent environment for patients requiring a higher level of care during their hospice journey. It further strengthens our continuum of care, ensuring every individual receives the right care, in the right setting, at the right time."
In October 2025, CommonSpirit Health transitioned its home health, outpatient palliative care, and outpatient hospice services to CommonSpirit Health at Home, the national home-based care business line for CommonSpirit Health. This strategic move brought operational and clinical management under the expertise of CommonSpirit Health at Home, while maintaining strong connections with our hospitals, facilities, and providers.
While CommonSpirit Health at Home provides in-home hospice and palliative care, Mercy Hospital continues to provide inpatient hospice and palliative care.
For inpatient hospice and palliative care patients, who were previously served in an adjacent wing of Mercy Hospital, care will return to the Hospice House wing. During this transition, hospice and palliative patient care was uninterrupted, and our patients and families continued to receive the high-quality, compassionate care our community expects.
