The national recognition validates Mercy Hospital's unwavering commitment to patient safety and quality care
DURANGO, CO (November 13, 2025) − Mercy Hospital announced it has once again been awarded an "A" Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog organization focused on patient safety. This marks the sixth consecutive time Mercy Hospital has earned Leapfrog's highest distinction for patient safety, underscoring its consistent dedication to protecting patients from preventable harm.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assigns an "A," "B," "C," "D," or "F" grade to general hospitals across the country, using evidence-based measures of patient safety focused exclusively on errors, accidents, injuries, and infections. Mercy Hospital's long-standing achievement reflects its deep-rooted culture of safety and its continuous commitment to operational excellence.
"To secure our sixth 'A' Hospital Safety Grade is truly an honor, and it's a direct reflection of our shared purpose to protect the lives and well-being of those who trust us with their care,” said Josh Neff, President of Mercy Hospital. “Every 'A' grade represents countless hours of vigilance, innovation, and compassion from our team, all dedicated to ensuring that our patients can focus on healing, knowing they are in the safest hands.
"There are only 346 hospitals nationwide that have achieved a LeapFrog A rating in five or more grading rounds, a mere 12% of all eligible hospitals in the country. This is a monumental achievement for Mercy, and demonstrates an unwavering commitment by our teams to the health and safety of our community."
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections, and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent, and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
“Earning an ‘A’ grade means Mercy Hospital has made a true commitment to put patient safety first,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate the leadership, board, clinicians, staff and volunteers that all had a role to play in this achievement.”
