Mercy Hospital is one of the 381 hospitals awarded a five-star rating by CMS, making up less than 10% of hospitals that were measured

Durango, Colo. (August 21, 2024) – The CommonSpirit Health Mountain Region is proud to announce that CommonSpirit Mercy Hospital in Durango, Co. has been awarded a five-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

CMS annually releases their updated star ratings for thousands of hospitals nationwide and assigns the ratings based on 46 hospital quality measures. These measures are divided into five quality categories: safety of care, mortality, patient experience, readmission rates, and timely and effective care. The ratings show how well each hospital performed on the identified quality measures compared to other hospitals across the country.

CMS awarded 102 fewer hospitals five-stars in 2024 compared to 2023. St. Anthony Hospital joins 381 hospitals across the country, including CommonSpirit Mercy Hospital in Durango, Co., who achieved a five-star rating – making up only 10% of the hospitals that were measured.

“Patient safety is at the forefront of all we do and this recognition solidifies our team’s commitment to ensuring all patients are receiving the highest quality of care when they come through our doors,” said Josh Neff, Chief Executive Officer, Mercy Hospital.

To be granted a rating, hospitals report their data to CMS through the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting Program, Hospital Outpatient Quality Reporting (OQR) Program, Hospital Readmission Reduction Program (HRRP), Hospital-Acquired Condition (HAC) Reduction Program, and Hospital Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) Program.

“I couldn’t be prouder of our employees for their consistent dedication to our mission of making the healing presence of God known in our world by improving the health of the people we serve,” Neff said. “Our people are the heart of what we do and this recognition is a testament of the incredible care they provide our community every day.”
