What is Robot-Assisted Surgery?

Our robot-assisted surgery program combines expert surgeons with the most advanced surgical technology. Using the next-generation da Vinci 5 system, our surgeons perform complex procedures through smaller incisions with enhanced precision. This means minimally invasive surgery is now available to patients whose only previous surgical options may have been traditional “open” procedures. Robot-assisted surgery with the da Vinci 5 is available across numerous specialties, including general surgery, gynecology, and urology.

Some of the benefits of robot-assisted surgery include:

  • Faster recovery time
  • Fewer post-operative infections and complications
  • Reduced pain
  • Less exposure to pain medications
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Minimal scarring
  • Smaller incisions
  • Reduced blood loss

Our Services

The da Vinci 5 robotic surgery system is the newest and most advanced of its kind. Using da Vinci 5, surgeons at St. Francis Hospital can perform bariatric surgeries, hysterectomies, prostate surgeries, colorectal surgeries, and hernia surgeries.

For our patients, robot-assisted surgery using the da Vinci 5 offers numerous advantages, including significantly less pain, reduced blood loss, and minimal scarring. This advanced surgical approach also leads to a shorter recovery time, allowing for a faster return to daily activities and often resulting in better clinical outcomes.

The da Vinci 5 robot is controlled by our specially trained surgeons from a nearby control center in the operating room. The da Vinci 5 features multiple robotic arms capable of precise maneuvers and rotations that surpass the natural ability of the human hand. Furthermore, the robot system’s cameras provide surgeons with real-time 3D imaging that is magnified 10 times what the human eye can see.

The new da Vinci 5 system is built on the foundation of decades of successful surgeries using previous da Vinci robot systems. To date, da Vinci robot-assisted surgery systems have performed more than 14 million procedures around the world. Some of the new features of the da Vinci 5 include:

  • Improved precision with new surgeon controllers and powerful vibration and tremor controls
  • The highest resolution and most realistic 3D imaging system
  • Force-sensing technology that enable surgeons to sense and measure the force exerted on tissue during surgery
  • Expanded computing power and advanced data capabilities
