West Jordan, UT (March 30, 2026) – CommonSpirit Holy Cross Hospitals in Utah, including Jordan Valley, West Valley, and Mountain Point, are expanding their advanced cardiac care offerings with the implementation of Left Bundle Branch Pacing (LBBP).
This sophisticated pacemaker procedure provides a more physiological and potentially life-improving alternative to traditional pacing methods, aiming to reduce the risk of heart failure commonly associated with older technologies.
The heart's electrical system is fundamental to its ability to function correctly. When this system malfunctions, often leading to a slow heartbeat, pacemakers become essential. While traditional pacemakers have been a lifesaving solution for decades, in some cases the way they deliver electrical impulses can, over time, contribute to heart failure.
Left Bundle Branch Pacing addresses this challenge by more closely mimicking the heart's natural electrical activity. In Left Bundle Branch Pacing, the pacemaker lead is precisely placed into the heart's septum, near the left bundle branch. This critical part of the heart's electrical circuitry allows for the delivery of electrical impulses that more closely resemble the body's natural physiological mechanism, thereby minimizing stress on the heart.
Dr. Konstantyn Szwajkun, an interventional cardiologist with CommonSpirit in Utah, began performing the procedure earlier this year.
"For certain types of patients, this is quickly becoming the best option for managing cardiovascular pacing issues," says Dr. Szwajkun.
LBBP has gained recognition in the medical community over the past five years for its benefits. It offers a more physiological ventricular activation, improved hemodynamic parameters, and a lower risk of pacemaker-induced cardiomyopathy compared to traditional right ventricular pacing. Studies have indicated that LBBP can lead to improved left ventricular ejection fraction and better stress tolerance.
An estimated 2-3% of adults aged 75 and older require pacemakers. For these individuals, and others needing pacing support, LBBP represents a significant advancement in maintaining heart health.
The procedure, performed in the Cath Lab, is similar to routine pacemaker implantations but involves a more complex technique for securing the lead within the heart's septum.
