About Mariel Szapiel, MD
Dr. Mariel Szapiel, MD, is a board-certified neurosurgeon at CommonSpirit Neurosurgery St. Anthony. She approaches her practice with deep respect for the trust patients place in her, often during some of the most challenging moments of their lives. She is committed to ensuring that patients and their families receive clear answers, understand their treatment options, and have a meaningful voice in every decision about their care. Dr. Szapiel believes that behind every diagnosis is a unique individual with a life, a family, and goals worth protecting. Her aim is to restore function, preserve independence, and help each patient live the life that matters most to them.
Dr. Szapiel earned her Bachelor of Science and her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Puerto Rico and completed her neurosurgery residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. With more than 15 years of experience, her clinical practice includes deep brain stimulation (DBS), epilepsy surgery, neuromodulation therapies, brain tumor surgery, minimally invasive cranial surgery, and comprehensive spine care, including robotic and image-guided techniques for degenerative spine disorders and spine trauma. She brings proven surgical innovations into her practice, offering patients greater precision, more treatment options, and better outcomes.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Szapiel enjoys spending time with her husband and three daughters, playing the piano, traveling, and exploring architecture and design. She has a lifelong curiosity about people, cultures, and ideas. She is fluent in English and Spanish.
