Low-Dose Radiation Therapy (LDRT)

Our cancer centers at Holy Cross Hospital - Davis and Holy Cross Hospital - Jordan Valley now offer a groundbreaking, non-invasive solution for chronic pain associated with arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. This low-dose radiation therapy is highly effective, providing significant pain relief and improved quality of life for many patients.

Benefits of LDRT

  • Proven efficacy: Up to 75% of patients experience considerable pain relief, with many able to discontinue or significantly reduce pain medications after just one or two treatment courses.
  • Non-invasive: It is a safe and well-tolerated alternative for chronic pain from conditions like osteoarthritis, tendinopathy, and plantar fasciitis.
  • Fast & Convenient: Treatment sessions are brief, lasting about 10 minutes, with patients typically in and out within 20 minutes. Minimal to no side effects are expected due to the low dosage.
  • Addresses the Root Cause: Unlike steroid injections, this therapy aims to reduce inflammation and pain, potentially delaying or preventing invasive procedures or surgery.
  • Broad Applicability: Its use is expanding to include conditions like osteoarthritis, bursitis, fasciitis, and tendonopathy.
Radiofrequency Ablation

Spine Care & Pain Management

Radiofrequency Ablation

Millions of people suffer from chronic low back pain, impacting their ability to work, enjoy hobbies, and simply live life to the fullest. For those people who’ve tried physical therapy, medication, and injections but still haven’t found relief, radiofrequency ablation of the basivertebral nerve (BVN) might be the answer to lasting pain relief.

Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that targets the basivertebral nerve (BVN), a major source of pain for many individuals with chronic low back pain. The BVN transmits pain signals from the vertebral body endplates in the spine to the brain. Radiofrequency ablation interrupts the nerve’s ability to transmit pain signals by

  • Targeted Approach: A small incision is made in the lower back.
  • Precise Navigation: Using real-time X-ray guidance, a specialized instrument is guided to the BVN.
  • Radiofrequency Neurotomy: Radiofrequency energy is applied to the BVN, disrupting its ability to send pain signals.
  • Minimal Recovery: The procedure typically takes about an hour, and patients can usually return home the same day.
  • Lasting Relief: Clinical studies have shown significant and sustained pain reduction for up to 5 years.
  • Minimally Invasive: Small incision, less tissue disruption, and faster recovery compared to traditional surgery.
  • Outpatient Procedure: Performed in an outpatient setting, allowing you to return home the same day.
  • Targets the Source of Pain: Addresses the underlying cause of pain by targeting the BVN.
  • Reduced Reliance on Pain Medication: Many patients experience a significant reduction in their need for pain medication.
  • Improved Quality of Life: Experience increased mobility, reduced pain, and a return to activities you enjoy.

This procedure may be a good option if you:

  • Have experienced chronic low back pain for at least 6 months.
  • Have been diagnosed with vertebrogenic pain, meaning the pain originates from the vertebral body endplates.
  • Have not found lasting relief from conservative treatments like physical therapy, medication, or injections.
  • Radiofrequency ablation, including cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacroiliac joint, and Basivertebral Nerve (BVN)
  • Low-Dose Radiation Therapy (LDRT) offered at Holy Cross Davis and Jordan Valley cancer centers
