Lung Health Testing: Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs)

Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) are a group of non-invasive tests that measure how well your lungs are working. They help us assess lung volume, capacity, airflow, and gas exchange.

PFTs help diagnose and monitor lung diseases, assess the severity of lung conditions, and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. They can also help determine if lung problems are caused by allergies or other conditions.

Conditions benefiting from Pulmonary Function Tests:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic cough or wheezing
  • COPD
  • Emphysema
  • Exposure to lung irritants (e.g., smoke, dust, chemicals)
  • Pulmonary Fibrosis
  • Pre-operative assessment for lung surgery
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Shortness of breath

Respiratory Virus Treatment & Care

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms, but it can be serious, especially for infants, young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems or underlying heart/lung conditions.

Recognizing RSV Symptoms

Symptoms typically appear 4-6 days after exposure and can include:

  • Runny nose
  • Decreased appetite
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Fever
  • Wheezing

In infants, severe RSV can present as:

  • Short, shallow, and rapid breathing
  • Struggling to breathe (nasal flaring, chest caving in)
  • Irritability
  • Lethargy
  • Poor feeding

Our RSV outpatient treatments focus on symptom management, supportive care, and preventing complications through:

  • Accurate Diagnosis: Rapid viral testing for timely identification
  • Supportive Care: Oxygen therapy, intravenous fluids for hydration, suctioning of airways, medication to ease breathing, and breathing treatments.
