A different approach to sleep apnea treatment
Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, interrupting breathing and preventing restful sleep.
Common symptoms can include:
- Loud or frequent snoring
- Waking up feeling tired or unrefreshed
- Daytime sleepiness or fatigue
- Morning headaches or dry mouth
- Difficulty concentrating
- Irritability or changes in mood
Untreated sleep apnea can also affect your overall health and may increase the risk of conditions including high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke and abnormal heart rhythms.
For many people, CPAP is an effective treatment. But when CPAP is difficult to tolerate or use consistently, other options may be available.
What is Inspire?
Inspire is a mask-free treatment for certain people with obstructive sleep apnea who have tried and struggled with CPAP.
The small device is implanted during an outpatient surgical procedure and works with your natural breathing pattern while you sleep. When activated, Inspire gently stimulates the airway muscles to help keep the airway open.
At bedtime, you simply use a small handheld remote to turn therapy on. In the morning, you turn it off.
No mask. No hose. No bedside machine.
Because Inspire works from inside the body, it can also provide added flexibility for patients who travel, camp or spend time away from convenient access to electrical power.
To be a candidate for Inspire therapy, patients must meet the following FDA indications:
- Age 18 or older
- Diagnosed with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
- Unable to benefit from CPAP
Is Inspire right for you?
Inspire is not the right treatment for everyone. Our team begins by understanding your sleep apnea, your experience with CPAP, and the reasons your current treatment may not be working for you.
Your evaluation may include:
- A consultation with a sleep apnea specialist
- Review of previous treatments and sleep studies
- An updated home or in-lab sleep study
- Evaluation of your airway anatomy
- A brief Drug-Induced Sleep Endoscopy (DISE), when appropriate, to determine where your airway is collapsing during sleep
Our goal is to help you understand your options and identify the treatment approach that best fits your needs.

If Inspire is recommended for you, our team supports you throughout the process.
- Consultation
- We review your symptoms, sleep studies, previous therapies and experience with CPAP.
- Candidacy evaluation
- Additional testing may be performed to better understand your airway and determine whether Inspire is appropriate.
- Implant procedure
- The Inspire device is placed during a surgical procedure, typically allowing patients to return home the same day.
- Activation
- After you have had time to heal, the device is activated by your sleep medicine provider.
- Personalized adjustment
- Therapy begins at a low setting and is gradually adjusted to balance comfort and effectiveness.
- Ongoing support
- Your sleep care team continues to monitor your progress and optimize your treatment over time.
Better sleep can change more than your nights
Effective sleep apnea treatment can help improve sleep quality, daytime energy, focus and overall quality of life.
For patients who struggle with CPAP, Inspire may offer another treatment option without the need for a mask or hose at night.
